Amped Replay update: new redact tool, improved motion detection

Hello everyone and welcome back to our summer release of Amped Replay, the forensic video player of choice for law enforcement officers and investigators! With this update, we bring you a brand new tab for redaction features as well as other meaningful improvements encompassing motion detection, annotations, and report generation. Read on to find out more!

See the New Features in Action

The Redact Tab

At popular demand, with this release, we have separated redaction tools from annotation tools. Previously, you needed to be in the Annotate tab to perform redactions with video and/or audio. Now, there is a dedicated tab called Redact that you can use for this purpose.

The new tab contains the Hide tool, previously in the Annotate tab, and also a Text tool for labelling redactions with textual annotations. And of course, you will find the dedicated Audio Redaction panel underneath the video redaction tools. You will also have a new Redact text box within the Bookmarks Panel.

The video frame in the viewer displays two cars and two people in a parking lot, with license plates and faces pixelated using the redaction tool. The right panel options include effect type (pixelation), strength slider, shape settings, edge feathering, invert, border color and thickness, and tracking controls. The audio redaction section with the waveform is also visible at the bottom.the

This makes so much more sense in terms of structuring your workflow. Redacting and annotating are two different forensic processes and should be treated separately. And, by having a dedicated tab for redaction features, we also substantially reduce the risk of unintentionally revealing again redacted subjects or features when adding annotations later. The workflow will now also be neater and better replicated in the technical report that the program can generate.

The software interface demonstrates the use of video redaction with pixelation applied to the vehicle license plate and annotation tools to add a yellow zoom rectangle for magnifying details. The right-hand panel displays video annotation settings, including zoom controls, zoom method (Exact Pixels), shape options (rectangle), border color (yellow), border type, border thickness, and contrast/brightness preview sliders. The timeline at the bottom shows audio waveform for synchronized analysis. This illustrates how Amped Replay is used for forensic video analysis, redaction, and annotation in law enforcement investigations.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR FIVE USERS! The introduction of the new tab will cause imported Replay projects to ignore any redaction conducted on images, video, and audio for a few weeks. The issue will be automatically remedied when we update Amped FIVE later on this year. If you need to import a Replay project with redactions into Amped FIVE in the meantime, please contact our support team and we’ll be glad to assist you.

Motion Detection: Select Multiple ROI’s

One of the most useful features within the Motion Detection tool is the ability to select a rectangular Region of Interest (or ROI) in the video to narrow down subjects or features to be found. But what if we are looking for multiple subjects or objects located in different areas of the picture? Well, with the new version of Amped Replay, you will now be able to keep track of multiple ROI’s within motion detection bookmarks and the generated report. To do this, follow these simple steps:

  1. Click on the “Set Region of Interest” button.
  2. Draw the ROI on the viewer as required and set the desired threshold as you normally would.
  3. Click on the “Add Motion Events Bookmarks” button to add the relevant bookmarks for the first ROI.

Once completed, click on the Set Region of Interest button again, draw the second ROI on the viewer and add further bookmarks as previously indicated. Repeat the process as many times as you need and export all bookmarks as required.

A pink annotation box marks the selected region of interest (ROI), while a red overlay highlights detected motion within the ROI. The Annotate tab is active at the top. On the right, the motion detection panel is open, with three yellow arrows pointing to (1) motion detection tool icon, (2) ROI box with detected motion, and (3) frame motion detection settings. The bottom timeline displays frames, elapsed time, and motion peaks, illustrating how Amped Replay enables ROI-based motion detection, annotation, and forensic video analysis.

If you generate a report, you will have a clear indication of all the ROI’s used together with their co-ordinates, size and corresponding bookmarks.

The top frame (Frame 6951) shows a man walking on the street at 12:12:29, with a motion region of interest (ROI) marked as [1034,293,133,115] and motion value 81.8000. The bottom frame (Frame 9472) shows a bald man standing near a car at 12:17:45, with ROI coordinates [576,471,231,142] and motion value 47. The motion detection bookmarks highlight changes in activity across specific time-stamped frames for forensic video analysis.

Annotate: Copy/Paste Keyframes

Another cool feature we have released in this update is the ability to copy and paste keyframes and their coordinates across the timeline of a video clip. This can be extremely useful when you are key framing a subject or feature whose movement is interrupted for a period of time. When that’s the case, you can simply copy and paste keyframes across to ensure there is no collateral movement between them. You can now find the copy/paste options at the bottom of the object context menu (right click on the annotation to access).

A right-click context menu is open, displaying options such as "Copy Position" and "Paste Position," highlighted in red. The Video Annotations panel on the right shows customization options including arrow head type, tail type, red color selection, and thickness control. The interface illustrates how investigators can add, copy, and position annotation arrows for visual emphasis in forensic video evidence.

Formats

In this update, we have added support for 7 new formats!

Remember: if you find a video file we don’t fully support, then there is a good chance we have never seen it before! Hop over to the Amped Support Portal, upload it, and we will get on it. While doing that, make sure to provide as much information as possible about the DVR’s brand and model, and possibly provide the proprietary player if available.

Submitting new formats not only helps you out but the entire Amped community, too. The best part? This is all included in an active Software and Maintenance Support plan. Learn here why it is important to keep your SMS up to date.

Other Improvements

We continue to improve performance and background functionality in every new release of Amped Replay. This is what we have also updated:

  • Renamed the file extensions of streams extracted by the Amped Engine. Extracted video will now feature a .vstream file extension, whereas extracted audio will feature an .astream file extension. All converted clips will still be stream copied into a conventional video extension (i.e. MKV).
  • Added a warning message when the cache folder exceeds a specified storage capacity (customizable via the .ini file).
  • Annotate: added the option to delete all but this annotation in the object context menu.
  • Annotate: improved the alignment of labels when using the text tool.
  • Improved the conversion handling of videos with multiple audio streams.
  • Improved the trimming behavior when selecting a range and exporting the original video as AVI or MKV files.
  • Changed the Duration (Time) field in the File Info panel (Play tab) to Video Stream (Duration) and Audio Stream (Duration) to account for files that have mismatching audio and video streams.
  • Improved the wording of a number of informational and error messages.
  • Updated the PortAudio library to version 19.7.0.

Bugs

In this release, we have fixed a number of minor issues reported by our trusted users.

  • Fixed a bug that caused increased memory consumption on multiple bitmap creations.
  • Fixed a bug causing a crash to the desktop when running in “High performance” mode within the Windows graphic card settings.
  • Fixed an issue with the size of the notification window that appears when connecting a new device.
  • Fixed a bug causing the program to crash when converting files containing an excess of zeros in their byte stream.
  • Fixed a bug causing empty exported file fields being shown in the report.
  • Fixed an issue with the report showing a missing logo after exporting media files.
  • The width and height of text fields in the Resize filter will now update correctly while typing.

The Final Word

Replay overcomes the challenges of a limited toolset often encountered by police officers and detectives worldwide. It protects them with the forensic rigor required in today’s legal environment and speeds up investigations.
