Amped FIVE: Forensic Image and Video Enhancement
July 3, 11:50 – 12:10

Video has become a powerful weapon in the fight against crime. It is, however, a very unstandardized and volatile media type that requires careful processing to ensure admissibility in courts. Amped FIVE is a stand-alone application to convert, interpret, analyze, bookmark, restore, enhance and output video and image evidence, all based on scientific methodologies and peer-reviewed filters. Using the software live, with real footage, this presentation will highlight the power of FIVE to the investigator, and how it enables the answering of questions and completion of tasks with unparalleled ease and speed.

Video and the Police: New Solutions to Old Problems with Amped Replay
July 4, 12:30 – 12:50

Police Officers, Investigators, Detectives and Major Investigation Teams all need to review and assess videos and images. This demo will introduce a new workflow to protect users and ensure that they can provide a forensic pathway through review, basic image enhancement and annotation, and then output to a standard format. The challenge of video within investigations will be explained through a live software demonstration on some casework.

Need to Process a Lot of Images But Time Is Short? Don’t Worry! Amped Authenticate Runs a Custom Set of Filters Offline and Caches Results For You

Hi, dear Amped blog readers, welcome to this week’s Tip Tuesday! As you surely know, Amped Authenticate is the most complete image authentication suite on the market. It has so many filters… and sometimes they could be too many! Today we’re going to see how you can save time by using Batch Processing and customizing the filter configurations.

Saving time for our users is one of Amped’s main goals. We know that every day you’re dealing with a lot of casework and investigations, so we constantly strive to make our products intuitive to use, fast, and configurable. Unfortunately, there are some things that take time by their nature, and this is especially true for some of Amped Authenticate’s Local Analysis filters. The Clones Blocks, to cite the worst case, can take several minutes to run on a single image, because it has to compute millions of descriptors and match them.

Of course, we don’t like the idea of making you sit in front of the monitor waiting for a filter to complete. That’s why Authenticate features the result caching system: once a filter is computed for an image, the result is stored and will be loaded the next time you click on the filter. This functionality works great when combined with another one, the Batch Processing (available under the Tools menu).

Amped FIVE Update 13609: Introducing the Copy and Verify Tool and More Updated Features

We’re back with another massive update to Amped FIVE and this time we’re super excited to be introducing a brand new tool!

Copy and Verify

One of the core principles of working with digital data in a forensic capacity is ensuring that data remains unchanged during investigation and analysis. At Amped Software, one of our core values is that all of our products are forensically sound. Steps we take to ensure this include using only filters to apply enhancements, generating detailed reports providing the ability to reproduce and audit analyst actions and making sure the original file remains untouched during an import or conversion.

Forensic Focus Interviews Blake Sawyer, Technical Sales, Support and Training for North America

Forensic Focus recently interviewed Blake Sawyer, our latest addition to the Amped team to support the North American market. We are reposting the interview Forensic Focus published on its website. To see the original post on Forensic Focus, click here.

Congratulations on your new role! Tell us more about your law enforcement career. How did you get into digital forensics?

Thanks so much! I am excited about the opportunity to come and work for Amped Software. I got into digital forensics in a kind of roundabout way. I earned a Computer Science degree in college and went to work for Apple. After several years of support and QA, I got involved in Audio and Video Production. That led me, eventually into working for the Plano Police Department in Plano, TX, USA in 2014.

At the time, there was no dedicated unit for video forensics, but the department knew there was increasingly more need for someone who understood video. Almost 6 months later, there was a major case involving a homicide where the majority of the evidence relied heavily on the video. Using Amped FIVE, I was able to help investigators understand what information we had on video, play and process almost 500GB of proprietary videos, and create analytic comparison and demonstrative charts. Since that time, the department has grown to have 3 full-time video analysts retrieving and processing 200-300 videos a month. Without FIVE that would have been almost impossible.

How did you come to work for Amped? What about the role and the company excited you most?

I have been a user of Amped FIVE since 2014. I was impressed with the ease of use and deep analytic potential of the product. Once I purchased Amped DVRConv, I was a big fan. Through the years I have been an advanced user and helped suggest features and improvements. When Martino Jerian, the CEO and Founder of Amped Software, called me about the job, I was very excited about the opportunity. I have always enjoyed solving problems and helping people. Working in a role that allows me to help and teach people in a field that I care a lot about is one of the things I am most excited about.

Being able to move from helping one local police department to helping Law Enforcement and Video Examiners throughout North America is something that I couldn’t pass up. The more people learn how to look at video and actually be able to get scientifically correct information from it is critical to the field. I am glad to be able to do my part.
